Behavior Management Idea with Among Us

I always see an increase in energy, behavior issues, and bickering between students every year when Spring rolls around and the weather starts to get warmer. Even my best classes seem to follow this trend. I created an engaging and relevant product to keep students on track and motivated as it gets closer to summer break.

What is Among Us?

Are your students obsessed with the popular online game Among Us? In this game some are chosen as crew members, while others are chosen as the imposters. The crew members have tasks to try to complete but need to watch out for the imposters. If you aren’t caught, you must meet with the other crew members to try and figure out who the imposters are! Although the game isn’t appropriate for school because there is a bit of violence, I wanted to adapt the idea and use it in my classroom. This is where the idea to tie it into my behavior management came into play.

What does Among us have to do with behavior?

Have you ever done mystery learners in your classroom? Mystery learners are students who are chosen by the teacher at the beginning of the day (I typically choose 2) and watched extra closely to see how they are following the expectations that day. If they do well, those students are announced at the end of the day and celebrated in some way. I like to do prizes, lunch with the teacher, line leader, or show and tell time for those students.

The concept of this Among Us activity is the same. A few students’ Among Us characters will be chosen each day and students will get the opportunity to win a prize.

So how do I set this up?

First, glue or tape the crew members and imposters signs onto a large envelope.

Next, have students each color their own crew member and label with their name. I also like to laminate mine so that they hold up!

Personal laminators are a MUST in my opinion! I got mine on Amazon for CHEAP and it has held up well. I used them to laminate my Among Us characters for this activity because it makes them more thick and durable then the school’s laminator seems to!

How can I use this in my classroom?

Place all the laminated crew members into the crew member envelope. Each day draw your desired amount of names out of the envelope and place into the imposter envelope. Also choose a desired behavior for the day. You can pick this yourself, or draw one from the pre-made strips included in this product.

As the day goes on, keep an eye on the students that were chosen at the beginning of the day, but don’t let students’ know who was chosen. At the end of the day if students were successful they “win” the game and are able to choose a prize. Anyone who didn’t follow the expectation for the day will be an “imposter” and will lose the game. I do not announce these students. I don’t want anyone to be embarrassed and humiliated. This doesn’t happen very often, but when it does I use it as a teachable moment to review expectations.

Once the day is over you can choose to take out the students who were already chosen, or place them back in the crew members envelope to be chosen another day. I find some students aren’t as motivated if they know their name isn’t in the envelope, so I do put them back in. Totally up to you! If you use this product I would love to hear how it went in your classroom!
